Sherman Alexander Hemsley

Sherman Hemsley was an American actor who departed this life at the age of 74 due to lung cancer. He was best known for his role as George Jefferson on the comedies "All in the Family" and the "Jeffersons," and as Deacon Ernest Frye on the NBC series "Amen." Before he decided to become an actor, he worked for eight years with the U.S. Postal Service.
Born 1938 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1972 he acted with the American Conservatory Theater production at the Geary Theater.
A year later, Hemsley won the role of Jefferson on “All in the Family” which proved so popular they got their own spinoff series “The Jeffersons” in 1974 which ran for eleven seasons till 1985.
In 1986, Hemsley joined the cast of “Amen” as Deacon Frye and had another successful series.
In 1992 he released an album, “Dance” which was rhythm and blues music. In 1995 he joined a touring stage show with the reunited cast of “The Jeffersons.”
He reprised his role as George Jefferson once again on "Tyler Perry's House of Payne" in 2
